About OSHC.net
OSHC.net is an English-language knowledge base focused on Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) in Australia. We break the real decisions international students face — from Student Visa 500 requirements and comparing the five approved providers (Medibank / Bupa / Allianz Care / NIB / ahm), through GP and specialist appointments, PBS prescriptions, renewing while back home, cover for dependants, and the end-to-end claims process — into focused Q&A articles.
We are not an insurance brokerage. This site doesn’t sell policies directly; it exists purely to assemble clear, source-backed facts in English.
Editorial stance
- Independence. Articles are not influenced by paid placements from insurers. All premiums and coverage details are pulled from the publicly available product disclosure statements (PDS).
- Timeliness. Australian OSHC rules are co-regulated by the Department of Home Affairs and the Private Health Insurance Ombudsman (PHIO). Premiums from all five approved providers are re-filed each 1 April. We note the PDS version and update date at the bottom of every article.
- Verifiability. Anything we cite about minimum benefits, the Medicare Levy Surcharge, PBS co-payments or similar is linked to the relevant Home Affairs, Services Australia or PHIO page. Sources are listed at the end of each article.
The five sections we cover
| Section | What’s inside |
|---|---|
| OSHC Basics | What OSHC is, Student Visa 500 requirements, the minimum-benefits list, waiting periods, prepaid months |
| Providers | Side-by-side look at Medibank / Bupa / Allianz Care / NIB / ahm — premiums, preferred hospital networks, extras |
| Seeing a Doctor | GP bookings, bulk billing, specialist referrals, triage at ED, mental health, PBS prescriptions |
| Student Visa | Student Visa 500 mechanics, OSHC start/end dates, Temporary Graduate 485, OSHC for dependants |
| Life in Australia | State-by-state medical systems, Medicare reciprocal countries, renewing while back home, visa-to-PR transitions, tax season refunds |
Each section has at least a dozen in-depth articles, covering every high-frequency decision from CoE to graduation departure.
What we don’t do
- We don’t sell policies. You won’t find hidden upsells in our articles. We surface a comparison platform (OSHC Australia) in the floating action button, but the premiums and terms are always those of the underwriting insurer.
- We don’t manufacture urgency. No “your visa will be refused” or “buy now to save big” framing — just timelines and options.
- We don’t fabricate claim ratios or hospital rankings. Any number we cite (premiums, reimbursement percentages, waiting periods) has a named source and a dated version.
