Can You Cancel Your OSHC Policy in 2026 and Get a Refund?

Updated:

Yes, you can cancel your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and usually receive a refund—but only under specific circumstances defined by Australian Government policy and your insurer’s rules. Cancelling your OSHC without meeting these conditions means you will not get your money back, and worse, it can put your student visa at risk.

Can You Cancel Your OSHC Policy in 2026 and Get a Refund?

Here is exactly when cancellation is possible, how refunds are calculated, and what you must do to stay compliant with your visa.

When You Can Cancel OSHC and Receive a Refund

Insurers assess refunds on a case-by-case basis, but the valid grounds for cancellation with a refund are well established. You must provide supporting documents for each.

Visa Refused

If Immigration refuses your student visa application, you are entitled to cancel your OSHC. When the policy has not yet started, insurers typically issue a full refund. You will need to submit the official visa refusal letter from the Department of Home Affairs with your cancellation request.

Course Cancelled

If you cancel your enrolment before arriving in Australia or before your course start date, you can cancel the OSHC policy. The refund amount depends on whether cover has already commenced.

Leaving Australia Permanently

If you withdraw from your studies and depart Australia for good, you can apply to cancel the remaining cover. The insurer will calculate a refund for the unused portion of the policy.

Granted Permanent Residence

Once you become an Australian permanent resident, you no longer need OSHC. You can cancel the policy and receive a pro-rata refund for the remaining period of cover.

Switching to Another Insurer

You are free to move from one government-approved OSHC provider to another. When you switch, your previous insurer will refund the unused cover on a pro-rata basis. You must provide evidence of your new, compliant OSHC policy.

How Refunds Are Calculated

Refunds are not handled by your education provider or migration agent. The OSHC insurer alone assesses and processes the refund.

Once a policy has started, insurers use a monthly pro-rata calculation. They deduct the period you were covered and refund the balance. Most insurers apply a minimum refund period—commonly 30 days—meaning if you have less than that amount of time remaining, you may not receive anything back. Check your insurer’s refund policy for the exact minimum.

If you paid for a full year but cancel after three months of cover, you would generally receive a refund for the remaining nine months, minus any applicable cancellation fee and subject to that minimum period rule.

The Rule You Cannot Break: Cancelling While Your Visa Is Active

This is the most important restriction. You must maintain OSHC for the entire duration of your student visa. You cannot cancel your policy simply because you finished your course early. If your visa is still valid, your OSHC must remain active.

Letting your OSHC lapse is a breach of visa condition 8501. The Department of Home Affairs can cancel your student visa for non-compliance. Do not cancel your OSHC until you have either left Australia, switched to a different visa type that does not require OSHC, or obtained permanent residence.

How to Apply for Cancellation

Contact your OSHC insurer directly. Every provider has a refund or cancellation form, usually available on their website. You will need to submit the completed form along with proof that you qualify for cancellation, such as:

Processing times vary by insurer. Refunds are paid to the original payment method or the account you nominate.

What About the Cooling-Off Period?

Most OSHC policies include a short cooling-off window after purchase. If you cancel within this period and have not made any claims, you can receive a full refund. This is the cleanest path to cancellation, but it only applies before your cover begins or very early in the policy term. Check your policy document for the exact cooling-off length.

Staying Compliant While You Decide

If you are unsure whether your situation qualifies for cancellation, contact your insurer before you stop cover. You can also use the official Australian Government website for private health insurance to compare OSHC providers and understand your obligations. Never let your policy lapse while your student visa remains in effect.
